For the Hamburger Steaks
- 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
- 1/2 cup bread crumbs
- 1 large egg
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
For the Gravy
- 1 can (10.5 ounces) cream of mushroom soup
- 1 envelope (1 ounce) onion soup mix
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 small onion, thinly sliced
- 8 ounces fresh mushrooms, sliced (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Patties: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, bread crumbs, egg, milk, finely chopped onion, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overwork the meat. Shape the mixture into 6-8 oval patties, about 1/2 inch thick.
- Brown the Patties: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for 2-3 minutes per side until browned but not cooked through. You may need to work in batches. Transfer browned patties to a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Prepare the Gravy: In a large bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup, onion soup mix, beef broth, and Worcestershire sauce until smooth.
- Assemble the Bake: Scatter the sliced onions and mushrooms over the browned patties in the baking dish. Pour the prepared gravy mixture evenly over the top, ensuring all patties are covered.
- Bake: Preheat the oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC). Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 35 minutes. Uncover and bake another 10 minutes, until the patties are cooked through, the gravy is bubbling, and the onions are tender.
- Serve: Remove from the oven and let rest for 5 minutes. Serve the hamburger steaks topped with gravy and onions, with mashed potatoes or egg noodles for a hearty meal.
Notes
- For even more flavor, use a combination of beef and pork or add a splash of soy sauce to the meat mixture.
- You can use canned mushroom stems and pieces if you donโt have fresh mushrooms.
- Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- This recipe can easily be doubled to feed a crowdโjust use a larger baking dish.
