Description

BBQ Chicken Stromboli is a delicious and easy-to-make dish that combines tender chicken, tangy barbecue sauce, and melted cheese, all wrapped in a golden-brown pizza dough. It’s perfect for a quick dinner or a crowd-pleasing appetizer.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 small red onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 tube refrigerated pizza dough
  • 6 slices provolone cheese
  • 2 cups shredded rotisserie chicken
  • 1/2 cup barbecue sauce (choose your favorite brand)
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a small skillet over medium-high heat, melt the butter. Add the sliced red onion and sauté until tender, about 5 minutes. Set aside to cool.
  3. On a lightly floured surface, unroll the pizza dough into a rectangle. Place the provolone cheese slices down the center of the dough, leaving about a 1-inch border on all sides.
  4. In a bowl, mix the shredded chicken with the barbecue sauce until well coated. Spread the chicken mixture evenly over the provolone cheese. Top with the sautéed onions.
  5. Fold the long sides of the dough over the filling, overlapping slightly, and pinch the edges to seal. Tuck the short ends under to secure the filling. Carefully transfer the stromboli to the prepared baking sheet, seam side down.
  6. Brush the top of the stromboli with the beaten egg. Sprinkle with Italian seasoning and grated Parmesan cheese.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown. Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes before slicing.
  8. Serve warm, with extra barbecue sauce on the side for dipping if desired.

Notes

  • For a spicier kick, add some red pepper flakes to the barbecue chicken mixture.
  • Feel free to substitute provolone with mozzarella or your preferred cheese.
  • This stromboli pairs well with a fresh green salad for a complete meal.
