Description

A delicious and elegant braided apple puff pastry filled with spiced apples and baked until golden and flaky, perfect for breakfast, dessert, or brunch.


Ingredients

  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
  • 2 medium apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, combine sliced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and flour. Mix well and set aside.
  3. Roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface into a rectangle, about 10×12 inches.
  4. Place the apple mixture down the center third of the pastry lengthwise.
  5. Cut slits on both sides of the apple filling, about 1 inch apart, creating strips.
  6. Fold the strips over the filling in a criss-cross pattern to form a braid.
  7. Brush the pastry with beaten egg and sprinkle with granulated sugar if desired.
  8. Transfer to the prepared baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and puffed.
  9. Allow to cool slightly before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • You can use store-bought pie filling as a shortcut.
  • Best served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of caramel sauce.
  • Can be made ahead and reheated in the oven for a few minutes before serving.
