Ingredients
Scale
- 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
- 2 medium apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1 tsp lemon juice
- 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- 1 tbsp granulated sugar (optional, for topping)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a bowl, combine sliced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and flour. Mix well and set aside.
- Roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface into a rectangle, about 10×12 inches.
- Place the apple mixture down the center third of the pastry lengthwise.
- Cut slits on both sides of the apple filling, about 1 inch apart, creating strips.
- Fold the strips over the filling in a criss-cross pattern to form a braid.
- Brush the pastry with beaten egg and sprinkle with granulated sugar if desired.
- Transfer to the prepared baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and puffed.
- Allow to cool slightly before slicing and serving.
Notes
- You can use store-bought pie filling as a shortcut.
- Best served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of caramel sauce.
- Can be made ahead and reheated in the oven for a few minutes before serving.
