- 2 large onions, sliced into 1/2 inch rings
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 cup milk
- 1 large egg
- 1 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- Oil for frying
Instructions
- Separate onion into individual rings and set aside.
- In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and pepper.
- In a separate bowl, beat the milk and egg together.
- In a third bowl, combine breadcrumbs, mozzarella, and Parmesan cheese.
- Dip each onion ring into the flour mixture, then into the milk-egg mixture, and finally coat with the breadcrumb-cheese mixture. Press to adhere.
- Heat oil in a deep skillet to 350°F (175°C).
- Fry the onion rings in batches for 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown and cheese is melted.
- Drain on paper towels and serve hot with dipping sauce of choice.
Notes
- Double dip in milk-egg mixture and breadcrumbs for extra crunch.
- Use panko breadcrumbs for a lighter, crispier texture.
- Cheese may slightly ooze during frying — that’s a good sign!
- Serve with marinara or garlic aioli for best flavor.
