Description

This Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole brings all the flavors of the classic French dish into a comforting, easy-to-make bake. Juicy chicken, savory ham, and melty Swiss cheese are layered together and covered in a creamy, flavorful sauce, then topped with buttery breadcrumbs for irresistible crunch. It’s perfect for family dinners or gatherings when you want something both impressive and simple.

Ingredients

Units Scale

For the Casserole

  • 3 cups cooked chicken breast, diced or shredded
  • 1 1/2 cups cooked ham, diced
  • 8 ounces Swiss cheese, sliced or shredded

For the Sauce

  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup low-sodium chicken broth
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste)

For the Topping

  • 1 cup Panko breadcrumbs
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Sauce: In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour to make a roux and cook for 1-2 minutes until lightly golden. Gradually whisk in the milk and chicken broth, stirring constantly until smooth and thickened, about 3-5 minutes. Whisk in Dijon mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Cook for another 2 minutes, then remove from heat.
  2. Assemble the Casserole: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Spread the diced or shredded chicken evenly in the bottom of the prepared dish. Top with diced ham, then layer the Swiss cheese over the ham. Pour the creamy sauce evenly over the top, spreading it with a spatula.
  3. Add the Topping: In a small bowl, combine Panko breadcrumbs with melted butter and parsley, mixing until the crumbs are coated. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the sauce layer in your casserole.
  4. Bake: Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until hot and bubbly with a golden topping.
  5. Cool and Serve: Remove the casserole from the oven and allow it to stand for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with extra parsley if desired.

Notes

  • Use rotisserie chicken for quick prep or any leftover cooked chicken you have.
  • Swap out Swiss cheese for Gruyère for a slightly nutty flavor.
  • This casserole can be assembled a day ahead, refrigerated, and baked when ready to serve.
  • For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free flour and breadcrumbs.
  • Pairs wonderfully with a fresh green salad or roasted vegetables.
