Scale
- 12 oz pasta (penne, rigatoni, or your choice)
- 1 lb Italian sausage (mild or spicy, casings removed)
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 small onion, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup chicken broth
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 tsp Italian seasoning
- 1/4 tsp crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh parsley or basil, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- Cook the pasta:
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the pasta according to the package directions until al dente. Drain and set aside. - Cook the sausage:
While the pasta is cooking, heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the Italian sausage, breaking it into pieces as it cooks. Cook until browned and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from the pan and set aside. - Sautรฉ the aromatics:
In the same skillet, add the diced onion and cook until softened, about 3-4 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for another 30 seconds, until fragrant. - Make the sauce:
Stir in the heavy cream, chicken broth, Parmesan cheese, Italian seasoning, and red pepper flakes (if using). Bring the mixture to a simmer, stirring occasionally, and cook for 5 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly. - Combine everything:
Return the cooked sausage to the skillet, along with the drained pasta. Toss everything together, making sure the pasta is well-coated with the creamy sauce. Season with salt and pepper to taste. - Serve:
Garnish with fresh parsley or basil and extra Parmesan cheese if desired. Serve hot and enjoy!
Notes
- You can substitute the heavy cream with half-and-half for a lighter version.
- Add some vegetables like spinach, mushrooms, or sun-dried tomatoes for extra texture and flavor.
- Use spicy Italian sausage for a little kick, or keep it mild for a family-friendly dish.
