Scale
- 4 cups (500g) all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 tsp salt
- 2 tsp sugar
- 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
- 1 1/2 cups (360ml) warm water (110ยฐF or 43ยฐC)
- 2 tbsp olive oil (optional, for a softer crust)
Instructions
- Activate the Yeast:
In a small bowl, combine warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy. - Mix the Dough:
In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil (if using). Mix until the dough comes together. - Knead the Dough:
Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes, until itโs smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5-7 minutes. - First Rise:
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until it doubles in size. - Shape the Dough:
Punch down the dough to release air. Shape it into a loaf and place it in a greased loaf pan or on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. - Second Rise:
Cover the dough and let it rise again for 30-40 minutes, until it puffs up. - Bake the Bread:
Preheat your oven to 375ยฐF (190ยฐC). Bake the bread for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and it sounds hollow when tapped. - Cool and Serve:
Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack for at least 15 minutes before slicing.
Notes
- You can replace all-purpose flour with bread flour for a chewier texture.
- Add seeds, herbs, or spices to the dough for extra flavor.
- Store leftover bread in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or freeze for longer storage.
