Ingredients
Units
Scale
- 1 clove garlic, halved
- 1 cup (240ml) dry white wine (or low-sodium broth for non-alcoholic)
- 2 cups (200g) shredded Swiss cheese (Gruyère or Emmental)
- 1 cup (100g) shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 tbsp cornstarch
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1/2 tsp Dijon mustard
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Bread cubes, vegetables, and apple slices, for dipping
Instructions
- Prepare the pot: Rub the inside of a fondue pot or saucepan with the cut sides of the garlic clove. Discard the garlic.
- Heat the liquid: Pour the wine (or broth) into the pot and bring it to a gentle simmer over medium heat.
- Mix the cheese: In a bowl, toss the shredded cheeses with cornstarch to coat. This helps thicken the fondue.
- Melt the cheese: Gradually add the cheese to the warm liquid, stirring constantly in a figure-eight motion until melted and smooth.
- Add flavor: Stir in the lemon juice, Dijon mustard, and nutmeg. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Serve: Transfer to a fondue pot or keep warm on low heat. Serve immediately with bread, veggies, and apple slices for dipping!
Notes
- If the fondue is too thick, add a little more wine or broth. If it’s too thin, add more cheese or a pinch of cornstarch.
- Keep the heat low to prevent the cheese from separating.
- No fondue pot? A small slow cooker or double boiler works great!
