Description

These Fluffy and Delicious Homemade Biscuits are light, tender, and perfectly buttery. Easy to make with just a few ingredients, they’re ideal for breakfast, as a side dish, or for making biscuits and gravy.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 3/4 cup milk (or buttermilk for extra tang)
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda (optional, if using buttermilk)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
  3. Add the cold, cubed butter to the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter, two forks, or your fingers, cut the butter into the flour until it resembles coarse crumbs with pea-sized butter pieces.
  4. Pour in the milk (and baking soda, if using buttermilk). Stir gently with a spoon until the dough just comes together. Do not overmix.
  5. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and gently knead it 3-4 times to bring it together. Pat the dough into a rectangle about 1-inch thick.
  6. Fold the dough over itself a couple of times (this helps make the biscuits flaky). Then, using a round biscuit cutter or a glass, cut out biscuits and place them on the prepared baking sheet. Make sure the edges are touching for soft sides or spaced apart for crispier sides.
  7. Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown on top.
  8. Remove from the oven and brush the tops with melted butter if desired. Serve warm.

Notes

  • For even fluffier biscuits, ensure the butter is very cold and handle the dough as little as possible.
  • If you don’t have buttermilk, you can substitute with regular milk and a teaspoon of lemon juice or vinegar to mimic the acidity.
  • These biscuits freeze well! Just wrap them tightly in plastic wrap and store in an airtight container for up to 3 months.
