Description

French Dip Sliders are mini sandwiches that combine tender roast beef, melted cheese, and caramelized onions on soft rolls, served with a savory au jus dipping sauce. They’re perfect for gatherings or a cozy meal at home. Here’s how to make them:

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • For the Sliders:
    • 12 Hawaiian sweet rolls
    • 1 pound deli roast beef, thinly sliced
    • 12 slices provolone cheese
    • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
    • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
    • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (optional)
    • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • For the Topping:
    • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
    • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
    • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
    • 1 tablespoon dried onion soup mix
  • For the Au Jus:
    • 1 packet au jus gravy mix
    • 3 cups water

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions:
    • In a skillet over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter.
    • Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they become soft and golden brown, about 12-15 minutes.
    • Season with salt, pepper, and thyme (if using). Remove from heat and set aside.
  2. Prepare the Rolls:
    • Preheat your oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC).
    • Without separating the rolls, slice them horizontally to create a top and bottom half.
    • Place the bottom half in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
  3. Assemble the Sliders:
    • Layer half of the provolone cheese over the bottom rolls.
    • Evenly distribute the roast beef on top of the cheese.
    • Spread the caramelized onions over the beef.
    • Add the remaining provolone cheese slices.
    • Place the top half of the rolls over the assembled layers.
  4. Add the Topping:
    • In a bowl, combine the melted butter, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, and dried onion soup mix.
    • Brush this mixture evenly over the tops of the rolls.
  5. Bake:
    • Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 15 minutes.
    • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 5-10 minutes, until the cheese is melted and the tops are golden brown.
  6. Prepare the Au Jus:
    • While the sliders are baking, prepare the au jus by combining the gravy mix with 3 cups of water in a saucepan.
    • Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce to a simmer until slightly thickened.
  7. Serve:
    • Once baked, remove the sliders from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes.
    • Cut into individual sliders and serve warm with the au jus dipping sauce on the side.

Notes

  • For added flavor, consider spreading a thin layer of horseradish sauce or mayonnaise on the rolls before assembling.
  • These sliders can be prepared ahead of time. Assemble them without the topping, cover, and refrigerate. When ready to bake, add the topping and adjust the baking time as needed.
