Description

This green bean casserole is the ultimate comfort food side dish. Tender green beans are mixed with a creamy mushroom sauce and topped with crispy fried onions. It’s an easy, crowd-pleasing recipe that brings cozy vibes to any dinner table — especially during the holidays!

Ingredients

  • 1 lb fresh green beans, trimmed and cut in half (or 2 cans, drained)

  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup

  • 1/2 cup milk

  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional for extra richness)

  • 1 1/2 cups crispy fried onions (like French’s), divided

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350°F.

If using fresh green beans, boil or steam them for 5–6 minutes until just tender. Drain and set aside.

In a large bowl, mix together the cream of mushroom soup, milk, garlic powder, black pepper, and cheese (if using).

Add the green beans and 1 cup of the crispy onions. Stir until everything is well combined.

Pour the mixture into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.

Bake uncovered for 25 minutes.

Remove from the oven, sprinkle the remaining onions over the top, and bake for another 5–10 minutes until golden and bubbly.

Let sit for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Use frozen green beans if you want — just thaw and drain before using.

  • Want to make it from scratch? Sauté fresh mushrooms in butter and use a homemade white sauce instead of the canned soup.

  • Add a splash of soy sauce or Worcestershire sauce for extra umami flavor.
