Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 cup uncooked orzo pasta
  • 1 (14-ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 3/4 cup beef broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 cups fresh baby spinach
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • Fresh basil or parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Sautรฉ the Beef and Onions:
    • In a large skillet or Dutch oven, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat.
    • Add the ground beef and cook for 5-6 minutes, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned.
    • Add the diced onion and continue cooking for another 5 minutes until the onion is softened.
    • Stir in the minced garlic, crushed red pepper flakes (if using), and Italian seasoning; cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
  2. Add Orzo and Liquids:
    • Stir in the uncooked orzo, ensuring it’s well combined with the beef mixture.
    • Pour in the tomato sauce, beef broth, heavy cream, and Worcestershire sauce; stir to combine.
    • Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat to medium-low and let it simmer uncovered for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
  3. Incorporate Spinach and Cheese:
    • Once the orzo is tender and the sauce has thickened, remove the pot from heat.
    • Stir in the freshly grated Parmesan cheese and baby spinach until the spinach is wilted and the cheese is melted.
  4. Season and Serve:
    • Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and freshly ground black pepper as needed.
    • Garnish with chopped fresh basil or parsley before serving.

Notes

  • For a spicier kick, increase the amount of crushed red pepper flakes.
  • Substitute ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option.
  • If the sauce becomes too thick, add a splash of beef broth to reach the desired consistency.
  • Serve with a side salad or garlic bread for a complete meal.
