Scale
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 pound lean ground beef
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 1 cup uncooked orzo pasta
- 1 (14-ounce) can tomato sauce
- 3/4 cup beef broth
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
- 2 cups fresh baby spinach
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- Fresh basil or parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- Sautรฉ the Beef and Onions:
- In a large skillet or Dutch oven, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat.
- Add the ground beef and cook for 5-6 minutes, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned.
- Add the diced onion and continue cooking for another 5 minutes until the onion is softened.
- Stir in the minced garlic, crushed red pepper flakes (if using), and Italian seasoning; cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
- Add Orzo and Liquids:
- Stir in the uncooked orzo, ensuring it’s well combined with the beef mixture.
- Pour in the tomato sauce, beef broth, heavy cream, and Worcestershire sauce; stir to combine.
- Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat to medium-low and let it simmer uncovered for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
- Incorporate Spinach and Cheese:
- Once the orzo is tender and the sauce has thickened, remove the pot from heat.
- Stir in the freshly grated Parmesan cheese and baby spinach until the spinach is wilted and the cheese is melted.
- Season and Serve:
- Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and freshly ground black pepper as needed.
- Garnish with chopped fresh basil or parsley before serving.
Notes
- For a spicier kick, increase the amount of crushed red pepper flakes.
- Substitute ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option.
- If the sauce becomes too thick, add a splash of beef broth to reach the desired consistency.
- Serve with a side salad or garlic bread for a complete meal.
