Description

Gyeran Bap is a classic Korean comfort food made with warm rice, a perfectly fried egg, and a savory soy sauce drizzle. It’s fast, budget-friendly, and totally satisfying — perfect for breakfast, lunch, or a late-night snack.

Ingredients

Units Scale

1 cup cooked white rice (preferably warm, short-grain or medium-grain)

1 egg

1 tsp sesame oil

1 tsp neutral oil (for frying)

1 tsp soy sauce (or to taste)

1/2 tsp toasted sesame seeds

1/2 green onion, finely chopped

Optional toppings: seaweed flakes (gim/nori), chili flakes, kimchi, butter, or gochujang

Instructions

  1. Cook the egg:
Heat a small non-stick skillet over medium heat with a little neutral oil. Crack in the egg and fry until the white is set and edges are crispy, but yolk is still runny (or to your preference).

  2. Assemble the bowl:
Scoop warm rice into a bowl. Place the fried egg on top.

  3. Season:
Drizzle with sesame oil and soy sauce. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and chopped green onions.

  4. Customize (optional):
Add a small pat of butter for richness, seaweed flakes for extra umami, or a spoon of gochujang for a spicy kick.

  5. Mix and eat:
Mix everything together before eating to coat the rice in the egg and sauce. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Use day-old rice for best texture, or microwave fresh rice for a warm, fluffy bowl.

  • For a heartier meal, add chopped spam, tuna, or sautéed vegetables.

  • Great base for creative toppings — think of it like a Korean rice version of avocado toast!
