Scale
For the Hamburger Steaks:
- 1 pound ground beef (80% lean)
- 1 large egg
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
For the Gravy:
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Prepare the Hamburger Steaks:
- In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently until just combined; avoid overmixing to keep the patties tender.
- Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape each into an oval patty, about 1/2-inch thick.
- Cook the Patties:
- Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
- Make the Gravy:
- In the same skillet, reduce the heat to medium and add the butter. Once melted, add the sliced onions and cook until softened and lightly caramelized, about 5-7 minutes.
- Sprinkle the flour over the onions, stirring constantly for about 1 minute to cook the flour.
- Gradually whisk in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet. Bring to a simmer and cook until the gravy thickens, about 3-5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Combine and Serve:
- Return the cooked patties to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. Spoon some gravy over each patty.
- Reduce the heat to low, cover, and let simmer for an additional 10 minutes to meld the flavors.
- Serve the hamburger steaks hot, smothered in gravy, over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.
Notes
- For added flavor, incorporate sliced mushrooms into the gravy along with the onions.
- To ensure even cooking, make a slight indentation in the center of each patty before cooking; this helps them cook flat without puffing up.
