Description

Hamburger Steak and Gravy is a classic comfort dish featuring seasoned ground beef patties pan-fried and smothered in a rich onion gravy. Itโ€™s perfect served over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.

Ingredients

Units Scale

For the Hamburger Steaks:

  • 1 pound ground beef (80% lean)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

For the Gravy:

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  • Prepare the Hamburger Steaks:
    • In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently until just combined; avoid overmixing to keep the patties tender.
    • Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape each into an oval patty, about 1/2-inch thick.
  • Cook the Patties:
    • Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
  • Make the Gravy:
    • In the same skillet, reduce the heat to medium and add the butter. Once melted, add the sliced onions and cook until softened and lightly caramelized, about 5-7 minutes.
    • Sprinkle the flour over the onions, stirring constantly for about 1 minute to cook the flour.
    • Gradually whisk in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet. Bring to a simmer and cook until the gravy thickens, about 3-5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Combine and Serve:
    • Return the cooked patties to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. Spoon some gravy over each patty.
    • Reduce the heat to low, cover, and let simmer for an additional 10 minutes to meld the flavors.
    • Serve the hamburger steaks hot, smothered in gravy, over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.

Notes

  • For added flavor, incorporate sliced mushrooms into the gravy along with the onions.
  • To ensure even cooking, make a slight indentation in the center of each patty before cooking; this helps them cook flat without puffing up.
