Description

Hawaiian Roll French Toast is a delightful twist on the classic breakfast dish, using the sweet and fluffy King’s Hawaiian rolls to create a rich and indulgent meal. This recipe is perfect for a weekend brunch or a special occasion, offering a unique flavor that elevates traditional French toast.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 package (12-count) King’s Hawaiian Original Hawaiian Sweet Rolls
  • 4 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup half-and-half
  • 1 tablespoon light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting
  • Maple syrup, for serving
  • Fresh berries or whipped cream (optional, for serving)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Rolls: Separate the King’s Hawaiian rolls and slice each roll in half horizontally.

  • Make the Custard: In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, half-and-half, light brown sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and salt until well combined.

  • Heat the Skillet: Place a large skillet or griddle over medium heat and add 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter. Allow it to melt and coat the surface evenly.

  • Dip the Rolls: Working in batches, dip each roll half into the egg mixture, ensuring both sides are coated. Let any excess custard drip off before placing the roll onto the hot skillet.

  • Cook the French Toast: Cook the rolls for about 2-3 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and slightly crispy. Add more butter to the skillet as needed for subsequent batches.

  • Serve: Once all the rolls are cooked, transfer them to a serving platter. Dust with powdered sugar and serve warm with maple syrup. Optionally, top with fresh berries or whipped cream for added flavor.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, you can substitute half-and-half with heavy cream.

  • To keep the cooked French toast warm while preparing the remaining batches, place them on a baking sheet in a preheated oven at 200°F (93°C).

  • This recipe can be easily doubled to serve a larger crowd.
