Description

This fresh and vibrant homemade salsa is perfect for dipping tortilla chips or topping your favorite Mexican dishes. Made with ripe tomatoes, zesty lime juice, and just the right amount of spice, itโ€™s quick, easy, and full of flavor. Youโ€™ll never want to go back to store-bought again!

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 6 medium ripe tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 small red onion, finely chopped
  • 12 jalapeรฑo peppers, seeds removed and finely diced (adjust for spice preference)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 2 tbsp lime juice (about 1 lime)
  • 1/2 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp salt (adjust to taste)
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • Optional: 1/2 tsp sugar (balances acidity)

Instructions

  1. Combine the chopped tomatoes, red onion, jalapeรฑos, garlic, and cilantro in a large mixing bowl.
  2. Add the lime juice, ground cumin, salt, and black pepper. Stir well to combine.
  3. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed, adding more lime juice, salt, or jalapeรฑo for your preferred flavor.
  4. For a chunkier salsa, serve immediately. For a smoother salsa, pulse the mixture in a food processor or blender a few times until it reaches your desired consistency.
  5. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow flavors to meld.
  6. Serve with tortilla chips, tacos, or as a topping for grilled meats and vegetables.

Notes

  • Use fresh, ripe tomatoes for the best flavor. If tomatoes are out of season, canned fire-roasted tomatoes can be a great alternative.
  • Adjust the level of spice by using fewer jalapeรฑos or substituting with a milder pepper like Anaheim or Poblano.
  • Storing tip: Homemade salsa tastes even better the next day. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
