Description

This Honey BBQ Chicken Rice recipe brings together tender, juicy chicken glazed in a sweet and tangy honey barbecue sauce, served atop fluffy steamed rice. Perfect for busy weeknights or casual gatherings, this satisfying main course is easy to prepare and packs bold flavors that everyone will love.

Ingredients

Units Scale

For the Chicken

  • 1 lb (450 g) boneless, skinless chicken thighs or breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

For the Honey BBQ Sauce

  • 1/2 cup barbecue sauce (your favorite brand)
  • 3 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional, for extra smoky flavor)

For the Rice

  • 2 cups cooked white or brown rice

For Serving (Optional)

  • Chopped scallions
  • Toasted sesame seeds
  • Steamed vegetables (such as broccoli)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Rice Prepare rice according to package instructions, using your preferred type (white or brown). Fluff it with a fork and set aside while you cook the chicken.
  2. Cook the Chicken Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the chicken pieces, season with salt and black pepper, and sauté until browned on all sides and cooked through, about 6–7 minutes. Remove excess fat if necessary.
  3. Make the Honey BBQ Sauce In a small bowl, whisk together the barbecue sauce, honey, soy sauce, and smoked paprika (if using).
  4. Glaze the Chicken Lower the heat to medium and pour the honey BBQ sauce over the cooked chicken. Stir to coat the chicken evenly, letting the sauce simmer and thicken for 2–3 minutes. The chicken should be glossy and well coated.
  5. Assemble and Serve Spoon the hot rice onto serving plates, top with the honey BBQ chicken, and drizzle any extra sauce from the pan over the top. Garnish with chopped scallions, sesame seeds, and steamed vegetables if desired. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Use chicken thighs for extra juiciness, or stick with chicken breasts for a leaner meal.
  • Adjust the honey to your preferred sweetness level.
  • Try mixing in steamed veggies (like broccoli, carrots, or snap peas) for a complete meal in one bowl.
  • For spicier chicken, add a pinch of chili flakes or hot sauce to the sauce.
  • Leftovers store well in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days.
