Description

A sweet and savory grilled chicken recipe with a tangy, delicious Huli Huli sauce, a popular Hawaiian dish that’s perfect for summer barbecues.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup pineapple juice
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Green onions, chopped, for garnish
  • Sesame seeds, for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together soy sauce, pineapple juice, brown sugar, ketchup, rice vinegar, sesame oil, garlic, ginger, and red pepper flakes (if using) until the sugar is dissolved and the sauce is smooth.
  2. Reserve 1/4 cup of the marinade to use as a glaze later, and pour the remaining marinade over the chicken breasts in a shallow dish. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or overnight for more flavor.
  3. Preheat your grill or grill pan over medium-high heat.
  4. Grill the chicken for 6-8 minutes per side, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (75°C), basting with the reserved marinade halfway through cooking.
  5. Once the chicken is cooked through, remove from the grill and let it rest for a few minutes before serving.
  6. Garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds before serving.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, marinate the chicken overnight.
  • Feel free to substitute chicken thighs for juicier, more flavorful meat.
  • This sauce can also be used for grilling pork or shrimp.
