- Prepare the Fries:
- Preheat the oven to 425ยฐF (220ยฐC) or heat oil to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC) if frying.
- Toss the cut potatoes in vegetable oil and a bit of salt.
- For oven-baked: Spread on a baking sheet in a single layer. Bake for 25-30 minutes, flipping halfway, until golden and crispy.
- For frying: Fry in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 4-5 minutes per batch. Drain on paper towels and season with salt.
- Caramelize the Onions:
- In a skillet, heat butter and oil over medium heat.
- Add the chopped onions, sprinkle with sugar and a pinch of salt.
- Cook slowly, stirring occasionally, for 20-25 minutes until the onions are golden brown and caramelized. Set aside.
- Make the Animal Style Spread:
- In a small bowl, mix together the mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, relish, vinegar, and sugar. Stir until smooth.
