Description

These adorable mitten cookies are a festive and fun treat for the holiday season! Made with a simple sugar cookie dough and decorated with colorful icing, theyโ€™re perfect for cookie exchanges, holiday parties, or as a sweet gift. Get creative with your designs and make each pair unique!

Ingredients

For the Cookies:

  • 1 cup (230g) unsalted butter, softened

  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar

  • 1 large egg

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract (optional)

  • 3 cups (375g) all-purpose flour

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

For the Icing:

  • 2 cups (250g) powdered sugar

  • 2-3 tablespoons milk or heavy cream

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • Food coloring (red, green, blue, etc.)

  • Sprinkles or edible glitter (optional)

Instructions

  1. Make the Cookie Dough:
In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract (if using), and mix until combined.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.

  2. Chill the Dough:
Divide the dough into two discs, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

  3. Preheat the Oven:
Preheat your oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.

  4. Roll and Cut the Cookies:
On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to about 1/4-inch thickness. Use a mitten-shaped cookie cutter to cut out the cookies. Place them on the prepared baking sheets.

  5. Bake:
Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

  6. Make the Icing:
In a medium bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk or cream, and vanilla extract until smooth. Divide the icing into separate bowls and tint with food coloring as desired.

  7. Decorate:
Use a piping bag or small spoon to decorate the cookies with icing. Add sprinkles or edible glitter while the icing is still wet. Let the icing set completely before serving.

Notes

  • Use different colors and designs to create unique pairs of mittens.

  • Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week.
