Description

These Never-Fail Scalloped Potatoes are rich, creamy, and irresistibly comforting. Layered with tender potatoes and a luscious cheese sauce, this dish is perfect for holidays, potlucks, or a hearty family dinner.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 4 cups thinly sliced potatoes (about 4 medium potatoes)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • Cooking spray or extra butter for greasing

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375ยฐF (190ยฐC) and grease a 2-quart baking dish.
  2. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt butter. Add flour and stir constantly for 1-2 minutes to form a roux.
  3. Gradually whisk in milk, ensuring there are no lumps. Add salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
  4. Continue cooking and stirring until the sauce thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
  5. Stir in 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese until melted and smooth. Remove from heat.
  6. Layer half the sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish. Top with half the chopped onions and pour over half of the cheese sauce.
  7. Repeat with remaining potatoes, onions, and cheese sauce.
  8. Sprinkle remaining 1/2 cup of cheese on top.
  9. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  10. Remove foil and bake an additional 20-25 minutes, until potatoes are tender and top is golden and bubbly.
  11. Let sit for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use half-and-half or heavy cream instead of milk.
  • Add cooked ham or bacon for a heartier dish.
  • Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes work best.
