Description
Parisian hot chocolate, also known as Chocolat Chaud, is a rich, creamy, and intensely chocolatey beverage enjoyed in French cafés. Unlike typical hot chocolate, it’s thick, velvety, and made with high-quality dark chocolate for a luxurious treat.

Scale
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 8 oz dark chocolate (70% cocoa or higher), finely chopped
- 2 tbsp granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
- 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
- A pinch of sea salt
Instructions
- Heat the Milk and Cream:
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the milk and heavy cream. Heat until it’s steaming but not boiling. - Add the Chocolate:
Reduce the heat to low and whisk in the chopped dark chocolate. Stir continuously until the chocolate is fully melted and smooth. - Sweeten and Flavor:
Add the sugar, vanilla extract, and a pinch of sea salt. Whisk until the sugar is dissolved, and the mixture is rich and creamy. - Serve:
Pour the hot chocolate into small cups or mugs. It’s traditionally served in smaller portions because of its richness. - Optional Garnish:
Top with a dollop of whipped cream or a sprinkle of cocoa powder if desired.
Notes
- For an even thicker texture, simmer the mixture for an extra 2–3 minutes while stirring.
- Use high-quality chocolate for the best flavor.
- Adjust sugar based on the bitterness of the chocolate and your taste preference.
