Ingredients

Units Scale

For the Cookie Dough:

  • 1 cup (230g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp almond extract (optional)
  • 2 1/2 cups (315g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • Red or pink food coloring

Instructions

  1. Make the Dough Base:
In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract (if using), and mix until combined.
  2. Add Dry Ingredients:
In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until a dough forms.
  3. Color and Shape:
Divide the dough into two portions. Leave one portion plain and color the other with red or pink food coloring. Mix until the color is evenly distributed.
  4. Form the Heart Design:
Roll the colored dough into a log about 1-inch in diameter. Shape it into a heart by pinching one side to create a point and indenting the opposite side for the heartโ€™s top curve. Wrap in plastic wrap and freeze for 30 minutes.
  5. Wrap with Plain Dough:
Roll out the plain dough into a rectangle wide enough to wrap around the heart-shaped log. Press to seal the edges and smooth out the surface. Wrap in plastic wrap and freeze for 1 hour.
  6. Slice and Bake:
Preheat your oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC). Remove the dough log from the freezer and slice into 1/4-inch thick pieces. Place the slices on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  7. Bake:
Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the edges are just starting to turn golden. Let cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Notes

  • Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week.
  • For more vibrant hearts, use gel-based food coloring.
  • You can freeze the dough for up to 3 months and bake as needed.
