For the Cookie Dough:
- 1 cup (230g) unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 tsp almond extract (optional)
- 2 1/2 cups (315g) all-purpose flour
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
- Red or pink food coloring
Instructions
- Make the Dough Base:
In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract (if using), and mix until combined. - Add Dry Ingredients:
In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until a dough forms. - Color and Shape:
Divide the dough into two portions. Leave one portion plain and color the other with red or pink food coloring. Mix until the color is evenly distributed. - Form the Heart Design:
Roll the colored dough into a log about 1-inch in diameter. Shape it into a heart by pinching one side to create a point and indenting the opposite side for the heartโs top curve. Wrap in plastic wrap and freeze for 30 minutes. - Wrap with Plain Dough:
Roll out the plain dough into a rectangle wide enough to wrap around the heart-shaped log. Press to seal the edges and smooth out the surface. Wrap in plastic wrap and freeze for 1 hour. - Slice and Bake:
Preheat your oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC). Remove the dough log from the freezer and slice into 1/4-inch thick pieces. Place the slices on a parchment-lined baking sheet. - Bake:
Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the edges are just starting to turn golden. Let cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
Notes
- Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week.
- For more vibrant hearts, use gel-based food coloring.
- You can freeze the dough for up to 3 months and bake as needed.
