Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onion and sautรฉ until soft and translucent, about 3-4 minutes. Stir in the garlic, red bell pepper, and fresh chili pepper, cooking for another 2 minutes. - Add spices:
Stir in the smoked paprika, ground cumin, turmeric, and chili powder (if using). Cook for 1 minute to release the aromas of the spices. - Create the broth:
Add the fish stock, diced tomatoes, and diced potato. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for 15 minutes or until the potatoes are tender. - Cook the fish:
Gently add the fish pieces to the soup. Simmer for 5-7 minutes, or until the fish is cooked through and flakes easily. - Add lemon and season:
Stir in the lemon juice and zest. Season with salt and black pepper to taste. Adjust the heat level by adding more chili if needed. - Serve:
Ladle the soup into bowls, garnish with fresh cilantro or parsley, and serve warm. Enjoy with crusty bread or rice on the side!
Notes
- For a creamier texture, blend a portion of the soup before adding the fish.
- Swap white fish for shrimp or a mix of seafood for variety.
- Adjust spice levels by adding more or less chili and chili powder.
