- 1 cup (227g) unsalted butter, softened
- 4 cups (480g) powdered sugar
- 2–4 tablespoons milk or heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
- Food coloring (optional)
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter with an electric mixer until creamy and smooth.
- Gradually add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, mixing on low speed to avoid splatter.
- Add 2 tablespoons of milk or heavy cream, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Increase the speed to medium and beat until well combined and fluffy.
- If the frosting is too thick, add more milk, 1 teaspoon at a time, until you reach your desired consistency.
- Add food coloring if desired, and mix until evenly combined.
- Use immediately to frost cooled sugar cookies or store in an airtight container for later use.
Notes
- To achieve a firmer consistency for detailed piping, use less liquid.
- For a glossy finish, add a small amount of corn syrup.
- Store unused frosting in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. Re-whip before using.
