Description

These fun and colorful Tie Dye Cookies are perfect for parties or a fun baking activity. Theyโ€™re easy to make and add a pop of color to any occasion. With a simple sugar cookie base and vibrant food coloring, you can create a rainbow of swirled designs in every bite.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract (optional)
  • Gel food coloring (multiple colors)
  • 23 tablespoons milk (if needed for dough consistency)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough:
    • Preheat the oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
    • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and baking powder.
    • In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
    • Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract (if using) until combined.
    • Gradually mix in the dry ingredients until a dough forms. If the dough is too dry, add 1-2 tablespoons of milk to get the right consistency.
  2. Color the Dough:
    • Divide the dough evenly into separate bowls based on how many colors you want.
    • Add a few drops of gel food coloring to each portion of dough and knead it until the color is evenly distributed.
  3. Create the Tie Dye Effect:
    • Take small pieces of each colored dough and press them together lightly. Gently roll them into a ball to blend the colors slightly, being careful not to overmix so the colors donโ€™t blend too much.
    • Flatten each ball slightly and place it on the prepared baking sheet.
  4. Bake:
    • Bake for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are set, but the centers are still soft.
    • Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • For the best tie-dye effect, avoid overmixing the colored dough. You want the colors to swirl together, not blend into one.
  • You can use any combination of colors to match a theme or holiday.
  • Almond extract adds a nice flavor but can be left out if preferred.
