- 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon almond extract (optional)
- Gel food coloring (multiple colors)
- 2–3 tablespoons milk (if needed for dough consistency)
Instructions
- Prepare the Dough:
- Preheat the oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and baking powder.
- In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
- Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract (if using) until combined.
- Gradually mix in the dry ingredients until a dough forms. If the dough is too dry, add 1-2 tablespoons of milk to get the right consistency.
- Color the Dough:
- Divide the dough evenly into separate bowls based on how many colors you want.
- Add a few drops of gel food coloring to each portion of dough and knead it until the color is evenly distributed.
- Create the Tie Dye Effect:
- Take small pieces of each colored dough and press them together lightly. Gently roll them into a ball to blend the colors slightly, being careful not to overmix so the colors donโt blend too much.
- Flatten each ball slightly and place it on the prepared baking sheet.
- Bake:
- Bake for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are set, but the centers are still soft.
- Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
- For the best tie-dye effect, avoid overmixing the colored dough. You want the colors to swirl together, not blend into one.
- You can use any combination of colors to match a theme or holiday.
- Almond extract adds a nice flavor but can be left out if preferred.
