- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg

- Red and pink food coloring
- Royal icing (for decorating)

Instructions
- Prepare the dough: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
- Mix the wet ingredients: In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar together until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes. Add the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract (if using), and mix until well combined.
- Combine dry and wet ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. The dough will be slightly sticky but firm.
- Chill the dough: Divide the dough into two portions, flatten each into a disk, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
- Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Roll and cut the dough: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to about ยผ inch thick. Use heart-shaped cookie cutters to cut out shapes. Transfer the cookies to the prepared baking sheets.
- Bake: Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are just starting to turn golden. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Decorate: Once the cookies are completely cool, decorate with royal icing and sprinkles as desired. Use red and pink food coloring for the icing to make festive designs.

- If you want softer cookies, slightly underbake them for a chewier texture.
