Description

- 5 bratwurst sausages
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 3 cups beer (preferably a lager or pilsner)
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 5 brat buns or hoagie rolls
- Mustard, sauerkraut, or other toppings (optional)
Instructions
- In a large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat and add sliced onions. Cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Add bratwursts to the pan with onions and pour in the beer. Bring to a gentle simmer.
- Simmer the brats uncovered for 15โ20 minutes, turning occasionally, until they are mostly cooked through.
- Preheat a grill to medium-high heat.
- Transfer the brats from the beer bath to the grill and cook for 5โ7 minutes, turning occasionally, until browned and crisp on the outside.
- Optionally, grill the buns for 1โ2 minutes until lightly toasted.
- Serve the bratwursts in buns topped with sautรฉed onions, mustard, sauerkraut, or desired toppings.

- Use a German-style beer for an authentic flavor.
- Keep the onions in the beer bath warm and serve as a topping.
- Brats can be fully cooked in the beer bath and then grilled for color and crispness.
